Hi-Res Boulders

This are few examples of hi-res surface details. The boulders are about 6x4x2m large, voxels are about 4mm small. Each of the boulders consists of about 600MV.

The coloring and surface elevation are functions of source photo(s) pixel colors and sets of generation parameters. It seems to be useful to use color information directly from a photo or texture as such information has the statistical properties of real-world objects.

The fine surface details can be seen on the following anaglyph images. Not all anaglyphs on this page are correct. In some of them only the central part of the image is easy to perceive in 3D.

The voxels are really small compared with the size of the objects. In a typical scene most of the voxels either must "contain" just a very low amount of incompressible information (information entropy) or they have to be significantly larger. Otherwise a large game-level data would take tera- or peta-bytes on a medium easily.

The following boulders have been generated at a lower resolution. The hi-res boulders above took about five hours to generate on a desktop PC with an Intel C2D processor and at least 7 hours on my crappy notebook with a similar processor (and some took far more than that). A big thanks goes to Martin Kútny (see donators) for the PC components!

The spatial voxel frequency of the following boulder was higher than the pixel frequency on the source photo. Therefore the surface is so smooth. This is no issue if the voxelized geometry is down-sampled at some later point during the compilation of the scene. Super-sampling followed by down-sampling of the generated geometry yields the best results in terms of visual quality and also compressibility of the data. In this case the geometry wasn't down-sampled.

The names on the boulders are the names of the first few of the people who are supporting the development of Atomontage Engine (all will follow in the future examples). It is probable that without the support of people who like this project it would be dead by now or it wouldn't be independent anymore. Thank you!

The source images are from alwahied. If you know a good source of quality hi-res photos of natural features (photos of rocks or similar) with relaxed copyright, please put the link in a comment below this article or let me know via e-mail.

Soon I will release more examples showing more complex hi-res geometry. With voxels of this size it is finally possible to show some really exciting stuff - chemical reactions, state change etc. Stay tuned!
